History of Body & Sole
When the last of my two children started school in 1982, at the age of 29, I decided I would like a career. Having completed adult matriculation over the previous two years I enrolled to become a social worker. Being an Aquarian with my humanitarian instincts I felt that this would be the perfect path for me. My intention was to work with the elderly within nursing homes. By the middle of my first year I had become discouraged, and sought a more hands-on approach. At the beginning of 1983 I enrolled in the School of Natural Aesthetics in Adelaide; this highly regarded school was run by Jan Smith and offered the first International (CIDESCO) Diploma in Beauty Therapy in Australia. 23 years later I am still enthralled with my chosen career and I absolutely love the challenge of helping all of my clients with their individual skin and wellness needs.
I began my beauty therapy career located in two small rooms within Scamps Hair Studio, at Reynella Shopping Centre. In 1984 it was a rarity for women to treat themselves to skin/massage treatments and waxing was still considered a luxury. Over the next three and a half years I quickly built up a good clientele and in July of 1987, when the opportunity became available, I transferred the business to the old Baptist church at Morphett Vale. This salon could possibly claim to be the first day spa in South Australia, as we converted the old baptismal into a six-person spa, which was very popular as a pre-wedding venue. The salon continued to grow at "The Church" and I started to introduce the first of the modern treatments, such as:
Non-surgical face lifting (still popular today); and
Slimtone body toning machine.
Due to the growth of the business 10 years later I moved to my present position at Southgate Plaza, which happens to be the old Reynella Shopping Centre renamed. Here I continued to expand the business and was one of the first to recognise the potential of lasers, eight years ago, when I introduced the T.C. Biolaser, a non-thermal healing laser, which set Body & Sole on the path to becoming a para-medical skin clinic. Since then I have purchased an Intense Pulsed Light (I2PL), and recently a dermal infusion microdermabrasion machine, both highly regarded for paramedical treatments. With the purchase of this advanced equipment also came the necessity to have staff trained to the highest standard. Five of the present staff at Body & Sole are paramedical skin therapists, having done advanced training at the Australian Institute of Laser Therapy in Melbourne.
In July 2008 Body & Sole purchased its own premises (what was then Southern Physio, at 46 Hillier Road) and is now able to offer its full range of services under one roof in a warm and inviting environment.
I consider the secret to my success to being always passionate about and really enjoying what I do. To being totally honest and approachable with staff and clients, and to quote an old cliche, "to always treat others as you would like to be treated." In the future I would hope to strive to keep pushing the boundaries, to keep offering my clients the treatments and results they seek, and to remain as passionate about my chosen career as I am today.
